This volume contains the most detailed and carefully written account of the explorations of Hernando de Soto (1496-1542), Governor of Florida, who set out to explore Florida in 1539. This work remains "one of the most authentic narratives of De Soto's great exploit." From the Introduction. The account was first published in Evora, Portugal in 1557, fourteen years after the survivors reached Mexico. The author was a soldier in De Soto's army, but chose to conceal his name, and thus remains completely anonymous. Hernando de Soto led the first European expedition into the modern-day southeastern United States, ranging over Florida, Georgia, Alabama and Arkansas, and was the first European to cross the Mississippi River. One of the Fifty Books of the Year and included in the Rounce & Coffin Club's Western Books Exhibition.
