LIMITED EDITION of 500 copies in Arrighi and Centaur monotypes on Van Gelder paper. 12mo. 191 x 132 mm. [vi], 56, [vi] pp. Color frontispiece of Johann Sutter, color portrait of Anna Dubelt Sutter after watercolor portraits, folding color plate after an original lithograph of Sutter's Fort, facsimile muster roll in Sutter's handwriting, the title page and text is ruled in brown ink, decorative initials, running heads, marginal notes; text clean, unmarked, pages lightly toned. Green paper over boards, top cover and spine labels titled in gilt, fore- and bottom edges untrimmed; binding square and tight, rubbed, corners showing, head of spine chipped, paper torn at hinges. Ex library copy with manuscript spine label at foot of spine, Bancroft Library bookplate on front paste down, pencil notations on title page, copyright page, and the page opposite the copyright page (inconspicuous). Prospectus laid in. Good. The Grabhorn's Diary of Johann August Sutter was one of the Fifty Books of the Year. This is the first time the Grabhorns used a special and inexpensive process for making the plates in the shop and printing colors for the illustrations.
