12mo. 6 3/4 x 4 1/4. 16 pp. Printer's device on title page, text in Dutch, French, English, and German; text clean, unmarked. Printed wrappers, red printer's device on front cover, yapp edges; binding square and tight, light shelf wear and toning. Very Good. A Day of Joy is a fifteenth century Christmas song. The text of the song was printed in Haarlem by Joh. Enschede en Zonen as an experiment to cast a font of type in sand. The important printing firm used the experiment as a means of proving that it is possible to get a font that is suitable for printing by casting the font in sand, as may have been done by some type-founders in the fifteenth century. The result is an elegant Gothic type face.
